This week, IFB asked a question I immediately knew the answer to: “What’s your signature color?”
My signature colors are on opposite ends of the gray scale spectrum. Although I’ve made fashion resolutions in the past to wear more color, I am consistently drawn to clothing of the black and white variety. White with black lettering, black with white print, monochromatic played up with texture… you name it, I’ve worn it. Even when I gather up the energy to purge my closet, all of my black and white items stay put. So what is it about the color combination that appeals to me so much? I feel most comfortable in black and white. They’re trendy in an understated way, which I feel can also be used to describe my style.
The combination of black and white is universally flattering and a timeless pairing. Brands like Chanel, Alexander Wang (pre-Balenciaga), and The Row all have a prominent theme in their design aesthetic: clean, simple colors dominate their runways. When I purchase a loud or colorful garment, sure I may get some wear and tear out of it for a few seasons, but the chances of me picking that out of my wardrobe years down the line are significantly lower than that of a black or white piece. Black, white, and other grayscales in between are constants in fashion. They are the items I am willing to splurge on because I know they’ll turn into a wardrobe staple. I mean, why do you think a girl’s first pair of Louboutins is almost always the standard black pump? Or their first Chanel is the classic black flap bag?

What is your favorite color(s) to wear? I have a Pinterest board solely for black and white inspiration because I love the color combo so much, and it’s easily my favorite board to scroll through.
