I have to admit, the liquid lipstick craze is lasting much longer than I anticipated. Like most beauty trends, I thought the hype would die down within 6 months to a year and we’d all comfortably revert back to the classic lipstick or lip gloss preference. Be that as it may, I love that we’ve expanded beyond the two primary lip products. You can check out my previous swatch posts on liquid lipsticks here, but today we’re talking about lip glides.
NARS Velvet Lip Glide
NARS recently came out with a new lip product called the Velvet Lip Glide. Described as a “long-lasting lip color with a smooth semi-matte finish” on Sephora’s website, a single NARS Velvet Lip Glide comes with 0.2 oz of product for $26. Alternately, Sephora currently has a Mind Game holiday gift set for $45 that will come with 6 mini versions of the lip glides–3 of which are exclusive to the set.
Regardless of which option you choose, the formula remains the same. The NARS Velvet Lip Glides are meant to be highly saturated and very hydrating products that hug your lips with a velvety smooth application.
NARS Velvet Lip Glide Swatches
My friend was kind enough to gift me (as an early Christmas present) with the Mind Game Velvet Lip Glide set, so I’ll be swatching the 6 shades included in the limited edition set:
- Bound – Soft Magenta
- No. 675 – Deep Peach
- Chez Claude – Warm Pink
- Unspeakable – Reddish Pink
- Plato’s – Deep Pink
- Toy – Deep Plum
- For reference, I applied the Best Damn Beauty Lip Mask as a moisturizer and lined my lips with MAC’s Plum lipliner for each lip swatch. NARS recommends applying the Velvet Lip Glide to bare lips for the most color payoff.
Overall Thoughts on NARS Velvet Lip Glide
I haven’t had them long enough to give an in-depth review, but as a first impression, I am fully satisfied with the Nars Velvet Lip Glides. It’s extremely rare to find a makeup set where every shade is wearable. Bound is my least favorite since I don’t usually wear pink lips, but I can still get away with wearing it because of the muted cool undertones. I pair it with MAC’s Plum lipliner and Whirl matte lipstick to add even more of a mauve tone.
My two favorites are Unspeakable and Toy. Unspeakable reminds me of the brick-red Crayola crayon, which was my favorite shade as a kid. (Fun fact: I use to color my fingernails with the brick-red crayon like it was nail polish.) Toy is the lip glide dupe for MAC’s Rebel lipstick. Toy is one of my favorite shades in the set because the color is so rich.
The key with purchasing this product is knowing what to expect. The thing to keep in mind is that NARS Velvet Lip Glides are not liquid lipsticks. Instead, they are more of an opaque lipgloss with less sheen and slightly longer wear time.Depending on your lip product preference, you may or may not like the NARS Velvet Lip Glide because it doesn’t maintain the same finish for a full day. It doesn’t last with the initial semi-matte sheen for the full day and will not truly dry as it isn’t meant to do that, but the lip glide will slowly transition into a lip stain. I like the uniqueness of the formula and will continue to wear each shade over the holiday season.
Who Is The NARS Velvet Lip Glide Best Suited For?
The Nars Velvet Lip Glides are ideal for the person who doesn’t like lip color commitment. You can swipe a shade on for a few hours and let it evolve into a subtle lip stain. Particularly with the holiday gift set, you have the ability to rotate between colors throughout the day and try on various shades with minimal commitment.
