Happy Sunday! With the Christmas holiday behind us comes a new event to plan for: New Year’s Eve. As we close out the decade and enter 2020, there is almost this unspoken pressure to do something this NYE. I mean, it’s 2020! You have to ring in the new decade in your most sparkly dress surrounded by friends, right?! Not necessarily.

3 Ways to Ring in the New Year that Don’t Involve Going Out
My friends and I have unintentionally created a pattern when it comes to our NYE plans. We typically have an on/off pattern of going out every other year. Since we went out and celebrated NYE in Austin last year, this was going to be the year to stay in and do your own thing. Admittedly, I started to feel the pressure of needing to do something this year because it feels like a milestone NYE. We started planning and scoping out events before ultimately going back to the original tradition and deciding to stay in this year.
For some reason, none of us were feeling the idea of going out–perhaps there were just too many consecutive news stories about crowds and chaos recently. My holiday season consisted of a lot of trips to Austin or my hometown, so the thought of adding another journey to my plate exhausted me. After all, my word for 2019 is balance. I say all that to say that I’m staying home this NYE!
If you aren’t feeling the idea of going out for NYE, that’s okay! You don’t have to give in to the pressure of kicking off the new year in a crowded club if you don’t want to. Here are a few things you can do for NYE that don’t involve going out–two of which don’t necessarily have to include others.
1. Have a Small NYE Gathering at Your Place
This option is best if you want the social elements of going out without the club element of going out. Let’s face it: going out for NYE can quickly turn into an expensive event that is overpriced and underwhelming. The crowd can be unpredictable, and the music may not be great, so take control of some of those aspects by hosting (or having a friend host) a small get together at your (or their) place!d
Having a kickback is what my friends and I started planning after initially looking for events hosted by other venues. We didn’t see anything that caught our eye, and nearly every outing had a price tag attached that we didn’t want to pay. Too many times, you splurge on NYE (because, why not?) only to get to the venue and feel less than impressed. Save the headache and plan a cute NYE-themed party at your place! Invite your closest friends, order pizza, and have fun!
2. Create Your 2020 Vision Board
Do you want to do something that will leave you feeling inspired rather than tired the next morning? What better time to plan your future! Grab some magazines, markers, poster board, and start mapping out your goals! Creating your 2020 vision board can be completed alone or with a few friends as a vision board party, so take your pick!
If you haven’t created a vision board before, think of it as a mix between a mood board and a goal sheet. Everything you want to manifest into your life over the next year put it on your vision board. Do you want to move to a different location? Purchase a new car? Get in the best shape of your life? Write it all out, cut out pictures that represent your future self, and put it on your board. Be as specific as possible and be sure to hang it up someplace visible, so you don’t lose sight of your goal throughout the year.
3. Three Words: Popcorn. Wine. Disney+.
Last but not least is the perfect introvert NYE night: staying at home and binge-watching TV. I was going to do the Whole30 cleanse again, but I want to blend a popcorn, wine, and disney+ night with the vision board night, so that will have to wait until actual New Years Day.
If you aren’t in the mood to get social, there’s nothing wrong with taking a little break and relaxing at home! Nearly everyone is off from work on New Years Day, which means NYE is the optimal time to finish (or start) binge-watching a show on your list. Whether it’s Disney+ for childhood nostalgia, HBO for quality writing and drama, or Netflix for the latest season of You, pick your streaming service and settle in for a night of entertainment.
