It’s that time of year! Even though we’re all wrapped up in the gift-giving side of the holiday season, don’t let time slip away! It’s not too early to finalize your NYE outfit! Before you know it, you’ll be perusing the shops, desperately looking for something pretty, shiny, and sparkly to wear to your New Year’s Eve festivities.
Whether you’re going out or heading to a friend’s house to bring in the New Year, there’s an outfit out there to fit the festive occasion. Personally, I don’t have a preference when it comes to how I spend NYE. I’ve gone out, gone to parties, and stayed cozy watching the ball drop on TV with my family. I’ve even skipped the countdown all together before and was asleep before the ball dropped. This year, I’m celebrating with friends in Austin so finding an outfit is a must! Regardless of what you end up doing, there are 3 no-fail fabrics for nailing your NYE outfit. Keep reading for the full list!

Velvet
I wore velvet to Friendsmas this year and loved the look! I’m not a fan of velvet for most of the year, but NYE and Christmastime is a totally different story. There’s something about velvet that feels luxe and festive during the holiday season. If this is your fabric of choice, I recommend sticking with a dress or pairing a velvet top with a bottom of a different fabric. A velvet dress looks so retro and 90s, but in a good way! It’s timeless for NYE outfits and on trend for the current season, so don’t be afraid to find your velvet crush!
Sequins
Easily the most worn option for NYE, sequins will make a statement! Every girl has at least one NYE where they want to be a walking disco ball, and there’s nothing wrong with that! I let my inner disco ball shine with a gold sequin top a few years ago, and that’s probably what let to purchasing the dress I’m wearing in this post. Everyone knows I am #teamgold 99% of the time, but I couldn’t pass up a fully sequined dress from Topshop…even if it’s silver!
The only disclaimer I’ll share with sequined clothing is to be careful! Sequined tops and dresses can rub against your arms (or your date’s arms) and get really uncomfortable and scratchy. Do a little rub test by running your hand back and forth against the fabric to see if your future purchase will have this problem. Depending on how the dress is made, you may want to layer up with a blazer to protect your arms!
Leather
A leather skirt is my go-to for a night look. Not only is it flattering and great to wear for those of us who like to show leg, but it’s also extremely easy to style! Even on NYE, it can be styled with a velvet bodysuit or a sequined top and fit the occasion. For maximum versatility, look for a black leather skirt instead of a bold color. You can wear it on NYE and repurpose it for a regular night out! Leather pants make an excellent alternative if you’d rather cover your legs and show off your arms or décolletage instead. Just be sure to pair leather with an open-toed heel to maintain balance with your outfit.

Of course, you can also mix and match the different fabrics! No matter what you pair together, they all look stylish and appropriate for the season! Although they aren’t specifically called out in the post, satin and lace also mix well with the fabrics mentioned and fit the NYE style! Fashion hack: If you’re wearing all black, mixing fabrics is the perfect way to add texture to your outfit and make a statement.
