Gone are the days of boring, traditional office attire. Sometimes, you want the freedom of going straight from the office out to dinner with your girls without having to stop home and change. If you work in a business casual office, it’s completely possible to build a versatile wardrobe. The best part? You can even get away with wearing a few timeless basics to the office when they’re appropriately styled. Who says t-shirts are too casual? Today, I’ve pulled 3 wardrobe staples you need in your closet and I’m styling them in outfits that can take you from work to weekend.
The 3 Wardrobe Basics:
So what’s the key to remixing your basics for the office and the weekend? Find the middle ground.
Despite its design flaws, the mullet’s “business in the front, party in the back” mantra is something worth incorporating into your personal style aesthetic. In the case of the work to weekend look, the key is in the quality. Do you have to spend thousands to wear a t-shirt? No, but you do want to search for tees and jeans that feel like high quality. The staples I’ve pulled are from Re/Done, so they pass the timeless quality test. Ready for the three looks? Let’s jump right in.
The Style Remix | Work to Weekend
Look One: Elevated All Black
The featured style essential: Heritage Cotton 1950s Boxy Tee from RE/DONE
Tee: RE/DONE | Pants: Nasty Gal | Earrings: Jenny Bird | Boots: Topshop | Belt: Forever 21
How to Make it Work for the Office:
A black t-shirt is the easiest to incorporate into your office style. The rich, opaque color instantly adds a bit of professionalism, and they’re less likely to be sheer. You do want to find a tee that’s semi-fitted and works well with your body type, which is why I opted for the Heritage Cotton 1950s Boxy Tee from Re/Done. It’s comfortable enough to wear all day, but it isn’t oversized like your average worn-in tee. For the office, it’s all about balance. I dressed up my black tee with high waisted striped trousers from Nasty Gal. Vertical lines lengthen the body, and the silky fabric flows beautifully from office-appropriate attire to a nighttime dinner. For added appeal, you can top the look with a sleek blazer while you’re at work.
Look Two: A Pop of Color
The featured style essential: Heritage Cotton 1950s Boxy Tee from RE/DONE
Tee: RE/DONE | Pants: Chriselle Lim x JOA | Earrings: Jenny Bird | Heels: Sam Edelman | Bracelets: Brook & York
How to Make it Work for the Office:
For this look, I once again paired wide-leg trousers with a classic Heritage 1950s Boxy Tee from Re/Done. This time, I wanted a lighter color palette. The white tee and yellow trouser pairing brings a bit of sunshine into your workwear while adding some fun into your social outings. While the striped pants were down to the floor, I picked a shorter cut by J.O.A for the colorful pair. The cropped length gives the pants movement, and it shows off your heel of choice. When you’re going straight from work to the weekend, you’ll want to wear a comfortable shoe. In my case, I stuck with my most comfortable heels by Sam Edelman, but be sure to check with your office if you’re a bit leery with wearing open-toed heels in the workplace.
Look Three: Floral for Year Round
The featured style essential: Levi’s High Rise Denim from RE/DONE
Top: Forever 21 | Denim: RE/DONE | Earrings: Jenny Bird | Heels: Sam Edelman
How to Make it Work for the Office:
Last but not least, I had to style a pair of denim! I wear jeans to the office on the regular and even shared a few tips discussing how you can wear jeans to the office in a previous post. What’s changed since then is my wash preference. While you may want to start with darker denim, I find that many business casual offices are more relaxed with the medium to light wash, especially on Fridays. Again, it’s all about how you style them.
Would I wear a classic tee and light jeans to the office? No. But what I will do is pair a lightly colored printed blouse with the denim. The light color palette creates a cohesive look and the blouse material makes the outfit office appropriate. The fit of the jeans depends on your preference and your job’s guidelines, but I always like to stick with slim, skinny, and straight leg jeans. The pair featured here is Levi’s High Rise denim from Re/Done and they are a true denim, which is perfect for the office.
